Music Library Staff Guide: Emergency Procedures

Emergency Procedures

The most common emergency encountered in the library is severe weather. The Music Library has a NOAA weather radio that issues alerts for the Nashville/Davidson county area. Vanderbilt also has a tornado siren that is activated in the event of severe weather. If there is a severe thunderstorm or tornado warning, the library staff will evacuate all users to the basement of Blair, accessed via the stairwell past the IRH. This is also the area to evacuate to in case of a shelter in place. You will be sent to evacuate with the rest of the library users. Remember to avoid windows, and use the stairs, not the elevator.

If the electricity goes out, there is an emergency flashlight plugged into the outlet directly behind the circulation desk.

If the fire alarm goes off, library staff will evacuate the Music Library. You will evacuate with the rest of the library users. Use the stairs (not the elevator) to exit the building. Our primary rally point is West Garage and the secondary is the Psychiatric Hospital parking lot.

There is a panic button next to the circulation desk. In case of an extreme emergency, press and hold it for 3 seconds and police will respond immediately.

In case of a medical emergency, call the Vanderbilt police at 911 (on campus phones or 615-421-1911 on any other phone) and get a library staff member. When reporting a medical emergency, provide as much information about the person injured and the situation as possible. There is an emergency medical kit in the workroom. It is in the top cabinet directly above the sink. Never give out any medicines from the first aid kit!
