Music Library Staff Guide: Labeling

When labeling...

  • All parts of the item (instrumental parts, media discs, the recording container, the recording commentary, the box that houses the parts and/or container, etc.) need labels and/or a stamp of ownership so that each part of the item can be easily identified if separated from the rest of the item.
  • While most items will be packaged in a similar manner, you may encounter items with packaging that will seem outside of the norm.  Ask questions about how to label these materials (if no one is available, put the item aside for later), or, find a similar item in the collection.  Do not make up new procedures.
  • Take care so that you end up with a neat, presentable, and uniform result.  The finished item should reflect the great deal of time and effort that was spent in choosing and cataloging the item for the collection.  The placement of labels should be optimal for upkeep of the item and shelving/housing the item.
