Central Service Desk Assistant Guide

Module Overview & Objectives

There are many common questions which you will be asked frequently while working at the service desk. Take time to familiarize yourself with the appropriate responses.

Recording Questions

When you are asked a question by patrons, it is important that you record all questions on the iPad for our statistics.

You will definitely need to know the following..

Q: Where is the restroom?

     A:  "By the main elevators (elevators 3-5) on floors 4 through 8. Handicap restrooms are located on the 4th floor next to the community room and the 6th floor next to the main elevator. All gender restrooms are on floor 4 by the community room and lobby."

Q: Where are the group study rooms?

       A: "They are on the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th floors. You can reserve them online at https://www.library.vanderbilt.edu/about/floorplans

Q: Where are the printers/copiers/scanners

      A: "There are copiers in the copy room off of the computer area near the Service Desk, on the 6th floor in the Periodical Reading Room, on floors 5, 6, and 7 by the elevators, and on the 8th floor in the Student Commons and Art collection."

Q: Where are the DVDs?

      A: "In the DVD room. Must be retrieved by student worker or full-time staff."

Q: My professor put a book/DVD on reserve. Where can I find it?

      A: "Reserves are shelved behind the service desk by call number. Books and media have green slips that indicate they are kept for reserve check out."  

Q: How do I get to the Divinity Library?

      A: "The Divinity Library is on the 2nd floor. You are currently on the 4th floor. You can get there by the stairwells located at each end of the mail lobby, or by taking Elevator #2 in the main lobby to the 2nd floor by the Divinity service desk, or by taking Elevator #3 to the 2nd floor and entering through the gallery."

Q: Can/How do I print from my laptop?

       A: "You have to configure it to print here. You can find the directions here (show them
      Central's Printing from a Laptop.)

Q: How do I add money to my card?

      A: "You can find that information at the Commodore Card office website. Funds can be added using the cash-only print card vending machine located by the computer workstations on the fourth floor."

Q: Where/What are the stacks?

      A: "The stacks are located on the 3rd through 8th floors and are where we house most of the
      circulating collection."

Q: How do I get to Special Collections?

      A: "Special Collections is now located off site in the former Disciples of Christ Historical Society building. The building is a short walk east of campus. The address is 1101 19th Ave South."
