Children's and Young Adult Book Awards: States Award Books

The Nutmeg Book Award encourages children in grades 2-12 to read quality literature and to choose their favorite from a list of ten nominated titles. We have four divisions: Elementary (grades 2-3); Intermediate (grades 4-6); Middle School (grades 7-8); and High School (grades 9-12). Jointly sponsored by the Connecticut Library Association (CLA) and the Connecticut Association of School Librarians (CASL), the Nutmeg Committee is comprised of children's librarians and school library media specialists who are members of our sponsoring organizations.

The purpose of this award program:
to encourage young readers in Delaware to become better acquainted with quality literature
to expose students to recent books
to honor favorite books and authors
to broaden students’ awareness of literature as a lifelong pleasure
Students will be asked to vote for their favorite book from a list of titles. In order to be eligible to vote, a kindergarten, first, or second grade student must read or listen to 8 of the 12 nominated books. A third through twelfth grade student must read or listen to 4 of the 10 nominated books.

The Blue Hen Book Award is a children’s choice award sponsored by the Youth Services Division of the Delaware Library Association. The award encourages literacy and library use by children and teens.

The Maine Student Book Award is designed to expand literary horizons of students in grades 4-8 by encouraging them to read, evaluate, and enjoy a selection of new books and to choose a statewide favorite by written ballot each spring.

Honoring the best beginning and transitional fiction and nonfiction for children

Dr. Helen Constant founded the Massachusetts Children's Book Award Program in 1975. Designed for Massachusetts schoolchildren in grades 4-6, the program briefly included grades 7-9 from 1978 through 1983.

Today, fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-graders are given a master list of book titles. After reading five of the books, students may vote for their favorite. The list is compiled from nominations of participating teachers, librarians, and interested publishers. A selection committee works with the nominations and chooses 25 titles to appear on the master list.

The Garden State Children's Book Awards were established in 1977 to honor books for younger readers. The Children's Services Section (CSS) of the New Jersey Library Association felt that books for the early and middle grades seldom received proper recognition. Yet it is at this age, more than any other, that the potential reader needs to be encouraged, stimulated and captivated by the printed work and good illustration.

Named for the main character in E.B. White's Charlotte's Web, the purpose of the NYSRA Charlotte Award is to encourage students to read outstanding literature and ultimately become life-long readers. The award has been given every two years by the New York State Reading Association. A committee of educators from across the state determines a ballot of excellent fiction and informational texts published in the previous two years.

The purpose of the Pennsylvania Young Reader’s Choice Awards Program is to promote reading of quality books by young people in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, to encourage teacher / librarian collaboration in young adult and children’s literature, and to honor authors whose works have been recognized by the students of Pennsylvania.

The award began in 1990 as a joint project of the Rhode Island State Council of the International Reading Association, the Rhode Island Library Association, and the Rhode Island Educational Media Association, under the coordination of the Rhode Island Office of Library and Information Services. Today, the Rhode Island Children's Book Award is co-sponsored by the School Librarians of Rhode Island (SLRI), the Rhode Island Library Association (RILA), and the Rhode Island Center for the Book at the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities (RICFB), and is advised by the Rhode Island Office of Library and Information Services (OLIS).

The Vermont Golden Dome Book Award* (formerly the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Award) was created to honor excellence in children's literature. Each year since 1957, Vermont students in grades four through eight have selected their favorite book from a list of 30 nominees. It is recommended that students read at least five of the year's nominated titles before voting. Voting takes place in the spring, generally beginning in April.

The California Library Association's John and Patricia Beatty Award honors the author of a distinguished book for children or young adults that best promotes an awareness of California and its people.

A committee of CLA members selects the winning title from books published in the United States during the preceding year. Patricia Beatty donated the initial cash endowment for the Award which now honors both her husband, John Beatty, who served as professor of English history and humanities at the University of California at Riverside prior to his death in 1975, and Patricia herself who died in 1991. Together the Beattys wrote eleven books of fiction for young readers; Patricia Beatty wrote numerous other books for young people, of which many have California or western settings.
It was Patricia Beatty's hope that the award will encourage the writing of quality children's books that bring us an awareness of California, its heritage or its future. The Beatty Award Medal was designed by Miyo LeFever.

The prize of $500 and an engraved plaque are presented to the recipient during the CLA Beatty Award and California Young Reader Award (CYRM) breakfast at the CLA annual conference. The literary breakfast also provides the author with a forum to speak about his/her book and provides an opportunity for attendees to meet the author during a book signing.

The California Young Reader Medal (CYRM) program encourages recreational reading of popular literature among the young people of our state. Since its inception in 1974, millions of California children have nominated, read, and voted for the winners of the California Young Reader Medal.

The Colorado Blue Spruce Young Adult Book Award recognizes the most popular books among middle and high school students in the state of Colorado.

How does it work?
There are three main components of the Nēnē Award: reading and voting, student contests, and the annual award ceremony.

The Treasure State Award was established in 1990 by Carole Monlux, Missoula County Schools Librarian and Bette Ammon, Missoula Public Library. The award is given to a picture book that was published within the last 5 years. Montana students in grades K-3 vote for one of the 5 nominated titles. The award is announced in April of each year.

Awards are given to titles voted on by Nevada children and students for best Picture Book, Young Reader, Intermediate and Young Adult categories.

The Oregon Reader's Choice Award was founded in 2010. The award is intended to be a fun and exciting way for Oregon youth in grades 4-12 to become enthusiastic and discriminating readers. During the course of the school year, Oregon students choose their favorite book in a real-life democratic process.

Each year the Children's Literature Association of Utah (CLAU), a volunteer organization of individuals who have a personal or professional interest in children's literature, sponsors the Beehive Book Awards to help motivate young people to read. Children vote from a short list of nominees in the following categories: Children's Fiction (chapter books), Picture Books, Informational Books, Poetry, Graphic Novels, and Young Adult Fiction. The title with the highest percentage of votes from the children in each category wins the award!

The Washington Children's Choice Award is selected annually by Washington State's K-3 students, who may vote for this award through their local teacher-librarian. This award is given through the WLA School Library Division!

The Wyoming Buckaroo Book Award was initiated in 1997 through the Wyoming Reading Council (WRC) for Wyoming children in kindergarten through third grade. In 1999 the Wyoming Library Association (WLA) joined with the WRC to support this reading program for children.
The first reading list was compiled from adult suggestions and included books regardless of award or copyright criteria. Thereafter nominations have been solicited by teachers and librarians directly from the students in Kindergarten through third grade.

The first winner of the Wyoming Buckaroo Book Award in the spring of 1998 was Stellaluna by Janell Cannon. Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg was the second place winner, and The Napping House by Audrey Wood was third.

The purpose of the Alabama Camellia Children’s Choice Book Award is:
To encourage Alabama young readers to become better acquainted with recently published quality books.
To honor favorite books and authors.
To encourage Alabama young readers to engage with quality literature to develop an awareness of reading as a lifelong pleasure.

The Arkansas Diamond Primary Book Award was established by the Arkansas Elementary School Council in 1998 to encourage reading for students in Grades K-3. The name of the award was chosen because Arkansas is the only diamond producing state. Like the Charlie May Simon Award, the Arkansas Diamond Award is selected by an annual vote. Children in Grades K-3 must have read at least three of the titles from the annual reading list and may vote for one title. Student voting is done in May each year.

The Charlie May Simon Children's Book Award for children's literature has been presented annually since 1971 to an author whose book has been selected through a vote taken by Arkansas school children in grades four, five and six. The purpose of the award is to promote better reading for children and to recognize Mrs. John Gould Fletcher, an outstanding Arkansas author who wrote under the pen name Charlie May Simon.

Charlie May Simon was born August 17, 1897, at Monticello, Arkansas, but moved to Memphis at an early age. She attended Memphis State University, Stanford University and the Chicago Art Institute. She returned to Arkansas after she married John Gould Fletcher in 1936. Throughout her lifetime, Mrs. Fletcher traveled extensively, gathering information for her many prize winning biographies. She lived at Johnswood, her home in Little Rock, until her death in 1977.

During her distinguished career, Charlie May Simon wrote over 27 books for children and young adults. Her first work, ROBIN ON THE MOUNTAIN, was published in 1934 and is considered a classic in children's literature. Other works include STRAW IN THE SUN, ALL MEN ARE BROTHERS, and FAITH HAS NEED OF ALL THE TRUTH.

The Arkansas Teen Book Award began in 2009 as a cooperative effort between public and school librarians across the state. Arkansas recognizes quality children’s literature through the Charlie May Simon and Arkansas Diamond awards, yet the acknowledgment of young adult literature had been greatly neglected. Enter six Arkansas librarians whose goal was to fill this gap. The steering committee for the teen award now consists of public librarians and school library media specialists from varying backgrounds and service areas around the state. Each year, dozens of volunteer readers working with teens across the state give their time to reading the nominated titles.

This program is designed to entice teens to read. In order to engage their interest and to provide a spur to critical thinking, the book selections include those that involve sensitive issues. The content of some of the titles may be more mature than younger students may have previously encountered. Please recognize that this is a voluntary reading program. Not every book selected will suit every student. In a democratic society, a variety of ideas must find voice. As readers, teens have the choice to read the more mature titles or to close the book.

he mission of the SSYRA Jr. program is to develop student interest in reading for pleasure by exposing them to a wide range of appropriate literature. Sunshine State Jr. books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation. Students are encouraged to listen to these books read to them, read them in a small group setting, or read independently to develop skills in fluency and comprehension. Students will be eligible to vote in the spring after listening/reading at least three of the books. The winning author and illustrator will be recognized at the annual FAME conference.

The Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) Program is a statewide reading motivational program for students in grades 3 through 8, in a collaborative effort between the Florida Association of Media in Education (FAME) and the Florida Department of Education (DOE). The purpose of the SSYRA Program is to encourage students to read independently for pleasure and to read books that are on, above, and below their reading level in order to improve their reading fluency. Sunshine State books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation. The SSYRA committee is comprised of 20 qualified school librarians located throughout the state of Florida, subdivided into two committees- grades 3-5 and grades 6-8.

The Georgia Children's Book Award was established in 1968 by Sheldon Root, professor in the Department of Language Education in the College of Education at the University of Georgia. The purpose of the award is to foster a love of reading in the children of Georgia and to introduce them to books of literary excellence. The annual award is given in two categories: picturebooks and middle grade books. The selection process involves teachers, school library media specialists, public librarians, and tens of thousands of youth from across the state.

The Georgia Peach Book Award works to promote reading and literacy skills in teens. Each year, a committee of school and public librarians reads widely to choose a list of twenty nominated titles. Then young adults choose books from among that list to read and rate. The books that earn the highest number of readers and ratings become the Peach Book and Honor Books.

Each year, a KBA committee for each grade band chooses the books for each of the five voting Master Lists (Preschool, K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12) in a year-long process. These committees are made up of volunteers and include school librarians, public librarians, and classroom teachers from across the state.

The Louisiana Young Readers' Choice program was founded in 1999 with the first award given in 2000. Participation in this program has climbed from 5,485 votes the first year to over 29,000 students participating in 2009. The purpose of the program is to foster a love of reading in the children of Louisiana by motivating them to participate in the recognition of outstanding books. Now entering its 20th year, the program continues to encourage Louisiana’s youth to read for pleasure.

The purpose of the program is to entice Louisiana teens to read and participate in the recognition of outstanding contemporary literature.

Mission: To introduce the children of Mississippi to current children's literature and instill a love of reading.
Children in grades K-12 who are students in Mississippi are eligible to participate. They will read the books and turn their votes in to their teacher, librarian, or other adult at an authorized voting site, who will then cast the votes electronically. Voting will be held in February, with winners announced at the Fay B. Kaigler Children's Book Festival.

The North Carolina Children's Book Award (NCCBA) is sponsored by the North Carolina School Library Media Association and the Youth Services Section of the North Carolina Library Association. Since 1992, North Carolina's school children have nominated their favorite books published within the past three years. Members of the NCCBA committee select 10-12 titles from the nominated books in two categories, picture books and junior books. During the course of the year, classroom teachers, media specialists and public librarians encourage children to become familiar with the nominees and vote for their favorite titles in March. The award is truly a children's book award - selected by the children of the state of North Carolina!

he North Carolina Young Adult Book Award was started in 2008 to encourage reading at the middle and high school levels by involving students in the process of selecting and voting on the best books for their age group. Studies consistently show that reading for pleasure begins to wane as children reach middle school age and the goal of this award is to get these kids interested in reading good, current books that appeal to their age level. Each year the committee selects ten books for middle school readers and ten books for high school readers published within three years of the award year to make up the two NC YA Book Award lists. The titles are chosen from nominations submitted by students and media coordinators across the state. Throughout the school year students are encouraged to read from the lists and think critically about what they read. Then in March, they vote for their favorite book. After tallying the student votes, a winner is announced in April and the new book lists are published.

Participation in the South Carolina Book Award program is open to all students who are attending public or private schools in grades 4K-12.
Older students may read from early in the school year until the voting date which will be published on the SCASL website and in the SCASL Messenger; younger students do best if reading is done the last few months before voting.
Students should vote only once in each of the categories for which they are eligible (PBA, CBA, JBA, or YABA).

The Volunteer State Book Award is sponsored annually by the Tennessee Library Association and the Tennessee Association of School Librarians. Each year, children across Tennessee are asked to read books from a list of nominated titles. The Volunteer State Book Award has four divisions--Primary (K-2nd Grade), Intermediate (Grades 3rd-5th), Middle School (Grades 6-8), and high school (grades 9-12). In the spring, those students who have read or listened to at least three of the titles from the list are eligible to vote for their favorite titles. These votes are tabulated and sent to the state organization. The book with the most votes statewide wins the award. The author of the book receives a plaque and is invited to Tennessee to receive the award.

The goals of the Virginia Readers Choice is to encourage young readers to become better acquainted with contemporary books with outstanding literary appeal.
To broaden students’ awareness of literature as a life-long pleasure.
To encourage reading aloud in classrooms as a means of introducing reading for pleasure.
To honor favorite books and their authors.

The West Virginia Children's Choice Book Award's purpose is to 'enrich the lives of children grades three through six by encouraging reading books of literary quality.' Established in 1981 by teachers Joyce Lang and Patty Benedum, the program was administered through the West Virginia Children's Book Award Committee until 2007. It is now hosted by the West Virginia Center for the Book at the West Virginia Library Commission, located in Charleston.

The Grand Canyon Reader Award is a reader award program for students in Arizona. Students vote annually on their favorite book in the following categories: Picture, Non-Fiction, Intermediate, Tween and Teen (which will be a voting optional category).

The Land of Enchantment Book Award is designed to encourage the youth of New Mexico to read outstanding books of literary quality. A committee sponsored by the New Mexico Library Association and the New Mexico Literacy Association selects four lists of books– Roadrunners (Grades K-3), Coyotes ( Grades 3-5), Lizards (Grades 6-8) and Black Bears (Grades 9-12). In April, New Mexico youth who have read at least three books from one of these lists vote on their favorite.

With this award, Oklahoma honors the Native American leader Sequoyah, for his unique achievement in creating the Cherokee syllabary. Sequoyah chose eighty-five symbols to represent all spoken sounds of the Cherokee language. In so doing, he created a way to preserve his people's language and culture.
Each master list is created to appeal to children in a variety of situations, interests and reading levels. The books on the master lists are not intended to be an automatic recommendation of the books. Since selection policies vary, one should apply the specific guidelines to each title and purchase those titles that meet individual selection policies. The master lists are not to be taken as recommendations that children be encouraged or required to read every title on a particular list. Teachers and other group leaders should carefully read and consider a title before reading a master list title to a class or group, or assigning a title as required reading. It is not the intention of the committees that every student must read every book on each master list.

Each year, 20 books are chosen for the Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List. Schools and libraries around the state participate in the program, encouraging students to read a minimum of five books from the list. In January, students vote for their favorite title. The author of the book receiving the most votes wins the Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA) which is presented at the Texas Bluebonnet Award Luncheon held during the TLA Annual Conference in the spring.

In the summer of 2002, several past presidents of ISLMA discussed the need for a K-3 children's book award. The ISLMA Board established a work group to investigate creation of such an award. In April 2003, ISLMA approved the establishment and support of The Monarch Award: Illinois' K-3 Readers' Choice Award.

The name Monarch was chosen because of its familiarity to K-3 children and to symbolize the growth, change and freedom that becoming a reader brings. The Monarch is designed to encourage children to read critically and become familiar with children's books, authors and illustrators. The program is open to all K-3 age children in Illinois.

n the spring of 2008, the ISLMA board approved establishing a committee to explore the possibility of a new book award that would fit between the Monarch and Rebecca Caudill Awards. Interested library media specialists met in June, and an outline of the proposed new award was presented to the board in August. In September, a survey about the new award was conducted, and 92% of respondents favored the creation of a new award. The ISLMA board approved the new award at their October meeting.

The award is designed for students in grades 3-5 who are ready for longer titles than found on the Monarch list, but not quite ready for the sophistication of some of the Rebecca Caudill titles. Named in honor of Big Bluestem which is the state prairie grass, the award may include both timeless classics and current titles, as well as books that have appeared on Monarch and Rebecca Caudill lists.

The Rebecca Caudill Young Readers' Book Award is an annual award given to the author of the book voted most outstanding by students in grades four through eight in participating Illinois schools. The award is named in honor of Rebecca Caudill who lived and wrote in Urbana, Illinois, for nearly 50 years. The award is given in recognition for her literary talent and the universal appeal of her books which have touched the hearts of many children and young adults

The Lincoln Award is given to the book from that year's master list that earns the highest number of student votes.

For a book to reach the master list, adult and young adult fiction and nonfiction titles must be nominated by teachers or librarians and vetted by the nominations committee. While the popularity of a particular title is important, the overall quality of the work is of primary importance. Each year, a panel of high school librarians, teachers, public librarians and students determines the final master list of twenty titles.

Registered schools promote these books, and students who have read four or more titles are eligible to vote. See the calendar for the award timeline and register today!

This program encourages teens to read for pleasure and to become lifelong readers. Named after former President Abraham Lincoln, an avid reader and noted author, the Lincoln Award is sponsored by ISLMA (Illinois School Library Media Association) and administered by the steering committee.

The Read Alouds Too-Good-To-Miss program is a project of the Association of Indiana School Library Educators (AISLE). Each year, a committee of media specialists, public librarians, classroom teachers, reading teachers, principals, bookstore operators, and/or university faculty members is formed to develop five read-aloud lists: one for primary age students, one for upper elementary, one for middle school students, one for high school students, and an ageless. The lists are publicized and distributed to Indiana schools to encourage sustained reading and oral sharing of literature among teachers and students.

The ultimate purpose of the Read-Aloud Books Too Good To Miss program is to promote a love of reading and books and to instill and nurture lifelong reading habits in Indiana students.

As stated, a diverse committee of educators and librarians have recommended these books as read-alouds. However, it is your responsibility to pre-read each book and decide if it is appropriate for your children or community.

The purpose of the Young Hoosier Book Award Program is to stimulate recreational reading among elementary and middle school/junior high school children. To encourage cooperation between administrators, school media specialists, teachers, public libraries, and the community in providing student participation in pleasure reading was the thrust behind the creation of Young Hoosier Book Award (YHBA) Program in 1974-75. By allowing students to vote for their favorite books, media professionals hoped that more students could be motivated to read more newly published books.

In 2018, the ILF Board approved changing the grade levels for YHBA books. The new categories are, picture books - grades K-2, intermediate books - grades 3-5 and middle school books - grades 6-8.

The Eliot Rosewater Indiana High School Book Award (Rosie Award) is chosen annually by students across Indiana in grades nine through twelve. Students at participating high schools and public libraries who read any of approximately 20 nominated books are eligible to rate each book they've read. The votes are tabulated each May, and the winner is announced. The purpose of the Rosie Award is to encourage high school students to read for fun. It also promotes cooperation between school administrators, media specialists, teachers and public librarians in broadening reading programs. Rosie promotes reading across the curriculum.

The Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Award is an initiative of the Indiana Center for the Book. This state award is administered by the Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Committee made up of professionals in Indiana including teachers, librarians, caregivers, and project coordinators; all of whom are involved in early childhood development. Picture books serve an important role in the first years of the life of a child. The purpose of this award is to encourage parents, caregivers, and very young children to interact together with exceptional picture books.

The purpose of the Iowa High School Book Award is

To promote leisure reading among Iowa high school students
to provide Iowa high school students with a diversified, quality reading list

Established in 1996, this award serves to honor internationally renowned Kansas author Bill Martin, Jr., as well as commend outstanding authors/illustrators. It also promotes in young children an appreciation for literature and encourages involvement in promoting quality picture books.

The White Award was announced April 22, 1952 at the dedication of the William Allen White Library on the Emporia State University campus. The first medal, awarded October 9, 1953 at the Kansas Library Association meeting in Hays, went to Amos Fortune, Free Man by Elizabeth Yates. In keeping with the concept of involving the children with the award, Chris Cunningham, a student, presented the award to Yates.

A committee searches out books from many sources. Nominations are sought from interested members of the community through a nomination form printed in Michigan Reading Association newsletter. A final determination of nominees, divided by grade levels, is assembled into a Great Lakes Great Books packet for distribution at the MRA Annual Conference and the Summer Literature Conference.

It is Minnesota Youth Reading Awards' (MYRA's) purpose to administer yearly "read and vote" awards programs, providing nominee titles that offer opportunities for Minnesota youth to see themselves and others in the pages, to make new connections, and to engage and enjoy the world of reading.

The Nebraska Golden Sower Award program was initiated by Karla Hawkins Wendelin and Dee Storey at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Three children's choice awards are presented annually:
Picture Book category: titles appropriate for grades kindergarten through 2
Chapter Book Grades category: titles appropriate for grades 3 through 5
Golden Sower Novel category: titles appropriate for grades 6 through 8

The Flicker Tale Committee has chosen books for three categories. Readers will not be restricted to any category based on age or grade level. Rather, we hope the categories will encourage children to read books of their choice at a particular interest or ability level. We encourage all of the young people (and the not-so-young people) to read the books and vote in any category they choose. Librarians do not have to vote on every category. Just the books they read to the students or the books they know the students have read. Each participating school and library is responsible for following the procedures, tallying votes and submitting totals to the Flicker Tale Chair by the deadline.

The Buckeye Children’s and Teen Book Award program is designed to encourage students in Ohio to read literature critically, to promote teacher and librarian involvement in young adult literature programs, and to commend authors of such literature.
The Buckeyes are one of the only state reader's choice awards in which students get to nominate the titles as well as vote on the final winners. The only adults who may submit nominations or votes are teachers and librarians who are representing a group of students from their school or library. This allows the Buckeyes to be truly a student-chosen award in all aspects.

The Prairie Bud, Prairie Bloom, and Prairie Pasque Children's Book Awards are sponsored by the South Dakota Library Association . Prairie Bud winners are determined by South Dakota PreK, kindergarten, and first grade students. Prairie Bloom winner are determined by South Dakota second and third grade students. Prairie Pasque winners are determined by South Dakota fourth and fifth grade students. Students are encouraged to read and give a star rating for any book they read from the masterlists of titles. The books receiving the most highest number of stars from the students win the awards. A committee of educators and librarians select the books nominated for the awards.
