Mindfulness is awareness of one’s internal states and surroundings. Learning to observe thoughts, emotions, and other present-moment experiences without judging or reacting to them can help you avoid destructive or automatic habits and responses.
Mindfulness is used in several therapeutic interventions, including mindfulness-based cognitive behavior therapy, mindfulness-based stress reduction, and mindfulness meditation.

Metta, or the practice of lovingkindness, is traditionally taught as one of the four brahma-viharas, or heavenly abodes. The others are compassion (karuna), sympathetic joy (mudita), and equanimity (upekkha). But it is the powerful practice of metta that brings all four of these qualities together. The Buddha taught metta as the purification of the heart that transforms how we relate to ourselves and the world.
