Law Library 101: Harvey.ai "Getting Started Guide"

An introduction to the law library, designed to help new Vanderbilt students succeed in their use of the law library and to succeed in law school study.

Getting Started Guide

Vanderbilt is thrilled to work with Harvey as partners in their inaugural Law School Program. Below, we’ve outlined additional background information on Harvey, instructions for logging into the platform, and sample use cases for getting started.

Harvey Overview:

Harvey is domain-specific AI for legal and professional services. Harvey streamlines workflows in areas including contract analysis, due diligence, compliance, and litigation to drive efficiency. Global law firms and Fortune 500 enterprises around the world use Harvey to enable faster, smarter decision-making. Harvey is used by 515+ customers in 54+ countries, including ~70% of AM Law 10 and almost ~50% of AM Law 100.

Logging In:

  • Visit Harvey.ai
  • Enter your Vanderbilt email address
  • A one-time log-in code will be sent to your email address from donotreply@harvey.ai. Enter the one-time code within 5 minutes - if not, you will need to request a new code by re-entering your email on app.harvey.ai

Once You’ve Logged In:

Sample Use Cases:

Your workspace includes two Vault folders containing sandbox documents, so you can run example prompts.  Please note that these Sandbox folders are available to all users and cannot be altered, but you can run example prompts preloaded in Harvey.

  • Vault project folder titled "Sandbox - Public Commercial Contracts", containing 102 publicly available commercial contracts
    • Example prompts included:
      • Force Majeure Clause Drafting (Assist Feature): “Based on the attached contracts, draft a force majeure clause for an agreement it which the parties are BUYER and SELLER.”
      • Identifying Parties Involved in an Agreement (Review Table Feature) Harvey searches all Contracts and creates a table with each question answered, such as “Parties to the Agreement, Governing Law, Most Favored Nation Clause, Arbitration Requirement, etc.)

  • Folder titled "Sandbox – Mass Torts Complaints", containing 92 complaints and related documents to litigation against Monsanto.
    • Example prompts included:
      • “Describe plaintiff’s theory that Monsanto fraudulently published scientific studies as described in these complaints.” (Assist Feature)
      • Defendants and Causes of Action Identification (Review Table Feature-Harvey searches all complaints and creates a table with each question answered)
