How can I access GIS software?

GIS software can be accessed on the the computers in the GIS Lab. Or you can download it on your own personal computer. To learn how to download GIS software, check out their systems dedicated sections in the research guide (ArcGIS Pro and QGIS).

What types of data formats should I expect?

Common GIS data formats include shapefiles (.shp), GeoJSON, raster data (.tiff), and geodatabases (.gdb). Each has specific uses depending on the analysis and software being used.

What do I do if I can’t find the data I need?

If you can't located the data you need, reach out to the GIS Lab for assistance,.

Are there any GIS workshops or tutorials available?

Can the GIS Lab help with my research project?

How do I book an appointment with a GIS Librarian?

Schedule an appointment with a Librarian. If our availability does not align with your schedule, please send us an email so we can find time to meet.

How do I access GIS software remotely?

We do not offer remote access to GIS software at this time.

Can I get help with georeferencing historical maps?

Yes! Submit an inquiry to the GIS Lab for assistance. Or, check out this tutorial by the University of Toronto Libraries on How to georeference images in ArcGIS Pro.

Does the GIS Lab offer printing services for large format maps?

No we do not offer any printing services. 

How can I cite GIS data in my research?

Citing geospatial data and software can be found in a dedicated section of this Research Guide.

Can I use the GIS Lab for group work?

Yes, our lab supports collaborative work, and we have tables that accommodate group projects. For extended use of the Lab for geospatial projects, please email us. Please note, if an event is scheduled in the GIS Lab it will be closed. 

What should I do if I encounter issues with GIS software?

If there are issues with any computers or GIS software, please contact the GIS Lab immediately so we can assist you.

Does the GIS Lab provide data storage solutions for my projects?
