You must add reference analytics for every question you respond to, either within the system (using the form provided) or in LibStats. Accurate statistics are needed for the yearly ARL/ACRL reporting.
Types of Questions:
- Directional – Do not require the knowledge, use, recommendation, interpretation, or instruction in the use of information resources. Examples include giving instruction in locating, within the library, staff, physical features (restrooms, stacks…), and giving assistance of a nonbibliographic nature with machines (printer jams, replace paper…)
- Reference – Contact that involves the knowledge, use, recommendation, interpretation, or individual instruction in the use of information resources by a member of the library staff. Information resources include printed and non-printed materials, machine-readable databases, the library’s own catalog and other holdings. For on-demand or unscheduled point-of-use instruction or assistance. Can be for an individual or group.
- EResources/Technology Assistance– Assistance that requires specialized knowledge of software or hardware. Examples include: help with programs like Zotero, Excel or other productivity software; ebook assistance; help with functionality/access issues of library databases or ejournals. (instruction in how to use library databases or ejournals should be entered as “reference”)
- Consultation – Consultations are one-on-one or small group appointments (i.e., scheduled) with a library staff member outside of the classroom. Include consultations conducted in a physical or digital/electronic manner. This does not include any on-demand or unscheduled transactions, no matter what the length or topic discussed.
