The Wilson Music Library is organized by the Library of Congress call number classification system. The series of letters and numbers asks as an address to a specific book or score and is arranged by subject. You can locate music materials by, M (Notated Music), ML (Literature on Music), and MT (Music Instruction and Study). Ask a staff member if you need help locating materials.


M (Notated Music)

  • M28 - M32: Piano Music
  • M1366: Jazz Ensembles
  • M1622: Songs published between 1850 and 1923

MT (Music Instruction and Study)

  • MT68: Improvisation, accompaniment, transposition
  • MT239: Piano performance

ML (Music Literature)

How to locate materials?

The Wilson Music Library holds jazz improvisation resources, literature on jazz musicians and the style, jazz method books, arrangements, and CDs for listening. Locating materials can be easy if you know tips and tricks for navigating the library call numbers and the library catalog. Below we will look at a few ways to search the library and library online catalog.

Subject headings

Conducting an "advanced search" by Library of Congress subject heading is a tip to help you find related material classified and identified under a linked subject area in the online catalog. Here's a list of subject headings that may be helpful:

Advanced Search 

  1. Click on "Advanced Search" in the bottom right hand corner of the library search bar. 
  2. Change search filter to "subject" and enter your subject heading in the search term box. For the example below, I used "Double bass music (jazz). This search will show results containing that subject heading in the record and will help narrow you results for the instrument and style of music.
