ENGL 3370 - The Bible in Literature - Moore

Vanderbilt University Special Collections copy sent to the Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) for conservation in 2016. Treatments performed included: "the volume was collated and disbound. Residual paper and adhesive from the flyleaves and previous paper repairs were removed using local applications of moisture. Tears were mended and folds guarded where necessary with japanese kozo paper and gelatin. Endsheets of burnished handmade paper with linen hinges were added, and a loose guard of handmade paper was folded around the spine of each gathering. The volume was sewn on linen cords with linen thread using a herringbone stitch. Back-bead endbands were sewn with linen thread. The volume was bound in full calf leather using a laced-in structure. A four-flap wrapper was constructed for the previous binding and flyleaves using Bristol. The volume and previous binding were housed in a custom drop-spine box. Written and photographic treatment documentation was provided"--NEDCC documentation papers, received November 2016.

Spine title: Heures gotic. Printed on vellum; very early printed edition of the Hours. Elaborately illuminated in gold ink, red and blue; seventeen full page illuminations, thirty-five small miniatures. Signatures: qp-aa-b-c8, d6, e4, f7 (f2 lacking), g-h8, i4, A-B8, c4. Bound in very old maroon morocco, back with raised bands, five panels tooled in gold, one plain, lettered HEURES GOTIQ; sides plain, bordered by three fillets; doublures marbelized paper.

London, : Printed by Adam Islip, at the charges of Bonham Norton., Anno 1598. Gothic type. Title within architectural border, with quote from Chaucer above, and quote from Ovid below. The Canterbury tales, The Romaunt of the rose, and The story of Thebes: compiled by Iohn Lidgate, monke of Bury, are each preceded by half-title within border showing the houses of York and Lancaster, terminating in Henry VIII. The portrait of Chaucer, preceding the life, has engraved border giving his "Progenie", with coats of arms, etc.

Most of the pieces have special title-pages dated 1678: Prosopopoia and The shepherds calendar have also separate paging. The shepherds calendar has numerous errors in paging. A catalogue of books printed for Jonathan Edwin (1 leaf) inserted after p. 258. "Brittain's Ida", first ascribed to Spenser in 1628 by Thomas Walkley, is now generally assigned to Phineas Fletcher.
