Some of your work will involve finding material that is older than August 1968. The available collected footage in the Vanderbilt TV News Archive does not go back further than that. How do you find earlier material? Here are some possibilities.
Unidentified former South Vietnamese government official visits Roanoke College, 10 March 1966
These are over 600 audio clips from news airchecks (audio recordings of parts of actual news broadcasts made for billing or legal purposes) from the period of 23 April 1961-27 May 1968, prior to the start of the Vanderbilt TV News Archives.
A group of about 18 videos from the period from the archives of WHDH, including a 1967 report on a high school senior who organized a pro-Vietnam War rally in Wakefield, MA. Some of the footage is without sound.
YouTube channel with a focus on footage (both news and otherwise from the 1960s and especially the Vietnam War era). This link in particular take you to 41 minute of edited footage from network stations, some of it predating 1968. This footage isn't indexed or tagged, so you will have to forward through to see what is of interest to you, but it is useful.
"In 2007, WSLS-TV of Roanoke, Va., gave news film and scripts from their mid-20th century broadcasts to the University of Virginia Library for preservation and use. The resulting collection spans 1951 to 1971 and comprises approximately 13,000 clips of 16mm film shown during news programs. It also contains roughly 18,000 pages of the accompanying scripts read on air by anchorpersons." Some of the footage is without sound.
