Fostering community, sharing power: Lessons for building restorative justice school cultures by Talia Sandwick, Josephine Wonsun Hahn, and Lama Hassoun Ayoub

  • This article presents findings from case studies of five diverse NYC schools using restorative justice approaches. Drawing on qualitative data from interviews and focus groups with educators, students, parents, and school safety agents, our findings provide insight into key practices and resources, stakeholder perceptions, and challenges of and practical strategies for building holistic, schoolwide restorative justice. The authors present a series of “lessons” to inform restorative justice practice and policy.

Using Restorative Practices to Prepare Teachers to Meet the Needs of Young Adolescents by Jamie Silverman and Molly Mee 

  • Through a descriptive study, the authors explored how to model the restorative practice of community circles with teacher candidates to prepare them to use the approach with their future middle school students.   • Whole School Restorative Approaches (WSRA) promote school community relationships and social and emotional skills which are core components for positive youth development. This study carries out a systematic review of the empirical evidence on the effectiveness of WSRA and develops some evidence-based practice guidelines on their effects.
