This research guide is designed to help students enrolled in MUSL 239 to successfully complete their research and information literacy assignments for the course.

Chicago Manual of Style

Chicago Manual of Style has two forms of citation styles:

  • Notes/Bibliography
    • Footnote citation style - full citation, followed by shortened citation, and can include additional supplemental information to not interrupt the flow of the paper
    • Bibliography at the end
  • Author-Date
    • In-text parenthetical citation
    • Bibliography at the end

Vanderbilt University Libraries subscribe to Chicago Manual of Style Online:

The Citing Music Materials According to Chicago Research Guide provides specific examples of how to cite different music materials, including scores, recordings, and streaming media.

You can also download a copy of the Quick Guide to Chicago Citations below.

MLA (Modern Language Association) Style

  • Include the author's last name and the page number (Linton, 7). If the source is electronic and formatted such that page numbers are not available, the source title can substituted in place of the page number. (Linton, "Kate's Citation"). Put the source title in quotation marks if using it.

How and when to use an in-text parenthetical citation:

  • Directly quoting someone else's work
  • Paraphrasing someone else's work
  • Don't need to include in-text citations for common knowledge

Additionally Resources:

APA (American Psychological Association) Style

In-text citation:

  • Author's last name followed by a comma and publication date. (Linton, 1994).

APA Basics for Quoting and Paraphrasing:
