Before defining Gen AI, let's start with Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI is an umbrella term referring to technology that helps machines and computers simulate human intelligence (IBM, n.d.). Generative AI is a form of artificial intelligence (AI) that, based on its training data and statistical probability, can generate new content such as text, images, audio, or video (Feuerriegel et al., 2024; IBM, n.d.). Generative AI has emerged from machine learning, a branch of AI that deals with using algorithms to analyze and find patterns in data (datascience@berkley, 2022).
Large Language Models (LLMs) are a form of Gen AI built on neural networks, trained on huge collections of text, and capable of generating text using statistical probability.
