PSCI 2237 — African Politics — Michelitch: When the Library Doesn't Have What I Need

When the Library Doesn't Have What You Need

Request the Item Via Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan (ILL):

What is ILL?

  • Document Delivery/ILL gives you access to loans or copies of materials that the Library does not own

  • Items can be requested from across town, across the country, or around the world

  • Journal articles are delivered electronically in as little as 3 days, sometimes only a few hours

  • Most books arrive in 7-10 days, so plan your request accordingly

  • There is no charge to you for this service!

How do I submit a request?

  • Log in to your secure, personal ILL account, choose a request form, and enter the citation information

  • Or, click on , available in many of the library's databases and online catalogs, to request items as you search.  For more information about FindIt@VU, click here.

Do I need to use ILL?

ILL is an optional service. Most undergraduates are able to complete their research assignments using the resources available at the Vanderbilt Libraries. However, if you find that the resources you need are not available, ILL can come to the rescue.

Who can make an ILL request?

Vanderbilt faculty, staff, and currently enrolled students.

What can I request?

We can usually borrow from other libraries the kinds of materials you find in the Central Library: including books, microforms, dissertations, and government documents. In some cases the item you request may be too rare or fragile to borrow.

How long does it take?

It usually takes a few weeks or less for a book, but sometimes takes several months or longer. This is another reason why it pays to start your research early. A good rule of thumb: Budget at least two week for receiving an ILL request.

What does it cost?

It's absolutely free of charge!

If you need a book for your research, you can suggest that we purchase the item. Note that this does not generally include any textbooks that are required or recommended reading for your courses.
