This guide contains links to the wide array of streaming video content available from library databases. This content can be linked directly from Brightspace courses. If a film or documentary is not available from our databases, the library will attempt to license it through another vendor. Contact Frank Lester for further details on licensing films for streaming that we do not currently have available.
Unfortunately, some titles will not available for streaming, for various reasons, but usually because of rights holder restrictions or because the film has never been digitized. If another title cannot be substituted, educators can use some exemptions to copyright to extract clips of videos and add them to a course management system. The DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) allows a narrow exemption for disabling copy-protection measures on physical media for in=person teaching purposes.
A Fair Use analysis should be done to help determine the amount of video that can be digitized. Staff at the VU Libraries are available to help with questions regarding copyright, and the Center for Teaching can provide advice on using Kaltura to create video clips for use in Brightspace. Contact Frank Lester with any questions about copyright for films, whether streaming or otherwise.
