ENGL 1100W - Composition - Bell: Finding Books in Library Catalog

What are Subject Headings?

Subject headings (our catalog refers to them as simply Subject) are words or phrases assigned to books and articles and used to index these items by topic or theme.

Below are Subject search terms that work well for this class--

Hurston, Zora Neale Their eyes were watching God
Hurston, Zora Neale-- Criticism and Interpretation
African American women in literature

Keyword vs. Subject Heading

STEP 1: Start your search process by brainstorming a list of keywords that describe the main concepts of your topic or research question.

STEP 2: Use the keywords for your initial searches.

STEP 3 Find the Call Number below the title in order to locate a print book.

STEP 4: Use the Subject Headings links in the Library Catalog record to refine your search.
