Law Library 101: Main Floor (Map Level 2)

An introduction to the law library, designed to help new Vanderbilt students succeed in their use of the law library and to succeed in law school study.

Service Desk

The Service Desk is the heart of library services. Direct your questions here. For any questions that the Service Desk staff cannot answer, the staff member will call a Reference Librarian. The Service Desk is where you:

  • Locate and check out materials
  • Pick up materials borrowed utilizing Inter Library Loan (ILL)
  • Report problems with photocopiers and printers or other disturbances in the Library
  • Access materials placed on Course Reserve and print copies of old exams
    • Items on Course Reserve are available for a two-hour checkout
  • Find a ready supply of earplugs

Moot Court Briefs are located between the Service Desk and Study Room 1. Briefs are self-serve.

If you have any issues or questions regarding library services, please contact the law circulation staff at: lawcirc@vanderbilt.edu.

Lost and Found

A Lost and Found is located at the Service Desk; items are retained for approximately one month.

Reference Shelf

The Reference Shelf is across from the Photocopy Room. This collection includes dictionaries (general, medical, foreign language, and legal), style and citation manuals (Bluebooks are on Course Reserve), government directories, books of quotations, and legal research and writing materials.

Beside the Reference Shelf is the collection of law-related DVDs. The DVDs are available for a 14-day checkout period. Overdue fines are $0.30 per day and $1 per day for overdue recalls.

Library Administration

Offices for the Director of the Library, Reference Librarians, and Support Staff are in the Library Administration area. Please note that all meetings with librarians must be conducted remotely via zoom

Printers & Photocopies

Printers are located just outside the law library. The printers are where you can photocopy, print, and scan documents. The Lexis printers are also housed in the same area. There is no charge to members of the law school for printing and scanning.

Instructions for scanning, copying, and printing are located beside the machines.

Please report any trouble with these machines to the Service Desk.

New Book Display, the Study Aids Shelf, and the Tennessee Section

The New Book Display, the Study Aids Shelf, and the Tennessee Section are located on the low shelves in the middle of the main reading room in the area between the security gates. The most recent editions of common study aids are available for checkout. Previous editions of some study aids are available in the main collection on the Balcony Level and are shelved by call number and are available for checkout as normal.

Main Level Stacks

The Main Level Stacks hold primary source materials such as reporters, federal codes and regulations, and federal practice materials. Tennessee Reports, Senate and House Journals, and additional Tennessee Codes are also housed here.
