What is inclusion?
As noted diversity advocate Vernā Myers puts it, “Diversity is being invited to the party. Inclusion is being asked to dance." - "Diversity Doesn't Stick Without Inclusion", Harvard Business Review, Laura Sherbin and Ripa Rashid, Feb 2017.
"Point blank, inclusion is the degree to which employees feel 'valued, respected, accepted and encouraged to fully participate in the organization." Sara Porterfield, 10 Diversity & Inclusion Statistics That Will Change How You Do Business, Bonusly, August 7, 2019.
"...to include is to do more than merely invite with words. To include is to do real work to understand the ways that others, different from ourselves, may be disinvited unintentionally by actions, issues, appearances, past missteps, or other factors that we have neither knowledge nor an understanding of. Inclusion requires us to seek out the opinions and perceptions of others, to be open to critique, to accept that another way of understanding the world is as real and true as our own, and to work to merge our understandings into an environment that serves all people equally."
