An Introduction to Markup Languages

This guide provides an introduction to a variety of markup languages, including TEI, VRA Core, and EAD,

Visual Resources Association (VRA) Core Schema

What is it?

VRA Core is a metadata standard developed by the Visual Resources Association (VRA) to describe works of visual culture and art, including the images that often represent or document them digitally. This can include paintings, drawings, architecture, photographs, books, decorative arts, performance art, installations, and so on. It is used worldwide by libraries, museums, archives, and other institutions.

History of VRA Core

VRA Core was first developed in 1996, but has been revised several times. The current version, VRA Core 4.0, was released in 2007. This schema is expressed in eXtensible Markup Language (XML), which allows it to be mapped to and from other schemas that are also expressed in XML, encouraging web interoperability.
