What is Interlibrary Loan?
Interlibrary Loan or ILL is a service that allows you to borrow books or receive photocopies of articles from another library.
Do I need to use ILL?
ILL is an optional service. Most undergraduates are able to complete their research assignments using the resources available at the Vanderbilt Libraries. However, if you find that the resources you need are not available, ILL can come to the rescue.
Who can make an ILL request?
Vanderbilt faculty, staff, and currently enrolled students.
What can I request?
We can usually borrow from other libraries the kinds of materials you find in the Central Library: including books, microforms, dissertations, and government documents. In some cases the item you request may be too rare or fragile to borrow.
How long does it take?
It usually takes a few weeks or less, but sometimes takes several months or longer. This is another reason why it pays to start your research early. A good rule of thumb: Budget at least two weeks for receiving an ILL request.
