Remember These Five Things

  1. Start your research with topics and translate those into subject and title searches. Use both the online catalog to find books and the subscription databases to find scholarly articles (or news articles, if those are what you need).
  2. For Google Scholar, go to Vanderbilt's Google Scholar page. This will give you a search with specialized features unique to VU that will tell you right away whether we have the article you're searching for in full-text. You can also get there from the Library homepage by clicking on "Databases" and then the highlighted "Google Scholar" link.
  3. Use both electronic and print books. Most books on the US criminal system and policing will be in the Central Library, on the fifth floor, in the KF section (US criminal law and federal law), or the HV section (criminology, police, and the penal system).
  4. If there is an article or book that we don't have in full text, use interlibrary loan for a quick turnaround on getting a copy of the article or book you need.
  5. If you are having trouble finding articles, books, or statistics on your topic, email me, phone me, or set up an appointment to talk to me. I'm here to help you dig and find the hard-to-find stuff.
