MUSL 3100 - Music of the 20th & 21st Centuries: Home

This research guide is designed to help students enrolled in MUSL 239 to successfully complete their research and information literacy assignments for the course.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of MUSL 3100, you will be able to:

  • Identify and use appropriate information sources to research twentieth and twenty-first century musical works.
  • Employ effective searching techniques for locating articles in the Music Periodicals Database.
  • Appropriately cite sources according to the Chicago Manual of Style.

Work Smarter, Not Harder!

This semester, you will be completing a research checklist as part of your listening guide assignment. Completing the checklist will help you to locate appropriate information sources for your listening guide. Be sure to complete each step, and set up an appointment with me if you encounter any difficulties. The earlier that you get started, the better off you will be.

When it's time to submit your listening guide, don't forget the following things:

  • Send the first draft of your listening guide and the research checklist to me at Do this when you send the draft copy to Professor Calico so you have time to make corrections before the final draft is uploaded to BrightSpace.
  • There should be footnotes and a bibliography formatted according to the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Check the formatting of your footnotes and bibliography. See the tab marked "Citation Assistance" for more information on how to get help with your citations.
