Library Research

The resources in this guide will help you understand the business side of engineering.  Each database has its own strength of focus--while some databases share similar information, no two share the exact same information.  Some databases will focus on business information, others on technical information.  In article databases such as Business Source Complete and Factiva, you will find news stories and journal articles that are helpful for finding current news and features about smaller companies. Information on smaller companies may be in local news articles and is less likely to appear in the other company databases such as OneSource, which tend to cover larger companies.  Databases like Compendex and Knovel will provide technical information on on a product or process.  Together, business and technical information give an engineering manager the complete picture they need to make decisions in the field.

This guide will help you:

  • Extend your engineering mindset to the skill of doing research and using library information
  • Demonstrate research strategies in sample databases
  • Acquire new skills to help you solve problems as a process

To begin your research, think about:

  • What You Already Know
  • What You Need to Know
  • Where You May Find the Information?
  • Who cares to collect the data?
  • Professional or Trade Group
  • Industry Expert or Association
  • Government or Regulatory Body
